What is an immigration examination?

An immigration examination is a required part of the process of becoming an American citizen. This exam is intended to ensure that applicants do not have certain health conditions or communicable diseases that could pose a risk to others.

You need to bring some paperwork with you to your exam. Form I-693 also called the Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination, is required. You can fill out the first few pages of the form prior to your visit to save time. Once you complete your exam, your practitioner gives you a sealed copy of the form to submit to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Not all practitioners are authorized to perform immigration examinations. At A Shamani Inc, you can rest assured that the team performs and documents your exam according to the established rules and regulations.

What kinds of health issues are checked during an immigration examination?

Your exam includes a discussion of your health history. Your practitioner performs screenings to assess your current health. Some of the components of the visit include:

  • Physical exam
  • Blood testing for syphilis
  • Screening for tuberculosis
  • Urine testing for gonorrhea

You also need to provide a copy of your vaccination record. Any gaps in your immunization can be adjusted with the appropriate vaccinations.

What if I “fail” my immigration examination?

It’s normal to be concerned about “passing” your immigration examination. After all, this is an important step in a process that often spans many years. If something arises during your exam that would prevent you from moving forward in the immigration process, it can be understandably frustrating.

However, detecting signs of disease also gives you the information needed to treat the condition and enhance your overall health. Some of the diseases that would prevent you from passing your immigration exam include:

  • Yellow fever
  • Smallpox
  • Measles
  • COVID-19
  • Polio
  • SARS
  • Pandemic influenza

If your exam reveals signs of any of these conditions, your practitioner discusses treatment options to help you preserve your health. You can always revisit the immigration examination process after you recover.
